European trading in
carbon emissions begins
The EU has launched the world's first carbon trading scheme, targeted to bring down greenhouse emissions while retaining industrial competitiveness.
 
Kyoto protocol
finally in force
Signing by Russia of the Kyoto protocol, which pledges to reduce greenhouse emissions 5.2% by 2012, means it is now in force. The world's biggest polluter hasn't joined up though.
